What 925 sterling silver means
At Jana 925 we use 925 sterling silver. Here is what that means, where to see the stamp and how to care for your pieces.
What is 925 sterling silver?
925 silver, also called sterling silver, has 925 parts pure silver in every 1,000. That is 92.5% silver. The other 7.5% is another metal, added because pure silver is too soft for jewelry you wear every day.
The 925 stamp
Sterling silver jewelry usually carries a small stamp that reads “925”, “S925” or “Sterling”. On the Tennis, Alara and Bendecida bracelets the S925 stamp is on the small tag of the extender.
Why does silver darken?
Silver reacts with air, moisture, sweat, perfume and lotion, and darkens over time. This is normal for 925 sterling silver, and it cleans up.
How to care for it
- Store it on its own in a dry place so other jewelry does not scratch it.
- Take it off to shower, swim or work out.
- Put on perfume and lotion before you put on your jewelry.
- Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. Silver darkens over time; a silver polishing cloth brings the shine back.
